Penina Biddle-Gottesman (Penny Anne) is a Bay Area-based audio engineer, producer, professional vocalist, film composer, instrument designer, performer, music teacher, and recent Oberlin Conservatory graduate with a major in Technology in Music and Related Arts. In 2026 she was a spring intern at WAM (Women’s Audio Mission), where she received her AVID Pro Tools certification and completed both levels of WAM academy. As an engineer she has worked on a wide range of genres, including pop, rock, soul, folk classical, and experimental sound art. She loves to take on projects that blend musical conventions and resist easy genre classification. During her time at Different Fur, she has recorded and/or mixed for a wide range of musicians, including Bobby McFerrin, Starfish Prime, Isabelle Waldner Kalb, Max Simas, Zen Williams, and Stuart James Allison, and has assisted on sessions for Spiritual Cramp, Buddy Jr, Christina’s Trip, Ketam, and Barry Walters.
She has scored films for Jonah Belsky, Piper Morrison, Sarah Rosenthal, ArVejon Jones, and Charlie Sortino. She has also composed and performed music for two Marin Theatre Company productions: Mother of the Maid (2019), and Dunsinane (2022). Her theatrical compositions were reviewed favorably in the San Francisco Chronicle. Penny began studying engineering and production on Logic Pro in high school as a DIY recording artist with just a Scarlett 2i2 and an SM57.
In college she continued developing her mixing and recording skills, working on music from her peers as well as her own. She worked as a promoter and booker at the Dionsysus Discotheque, a live sound engineer for Oberlin’s Modern Music Guild, an electrical engineering assistant at Dogbotic Labs, and a choral scholar at the Christ Episcopal Church. In 2024 Penny recieved the Allen Strange Memorial Award from SEAMUS (the Society of Electro Acoustic Music of the United States) for a collaborative wearable instrument “String Thing” she built with her collaborator Fae Ordaz. The two were also selected to perform in Oberlin Conservatory’s Danenburg Honors Recital Series. She and Ordaz have toured across the country, performing at academic conferences, universities, arts festivals, radio shows, DIY venues, and basements. Penny releases experimental pop music under the name Penny Anne, and performs regularly as a soloist and with her band Duty Free.
