Born in Chicago and raised in Northwest Indiana, Grace Coleman saved tips from bussing tables until she had enough to move to San Francisco in 2009. She enrolled in Ex’pression College, and as an intern at Different Fur, brought her multi-instrumental education and experience in home recording to a professional level. Her time behind the SSL has resulted in mixes for both buzzbands and up-and-comers, mixing and tracking both live sessions and full-length albums. Artists she has worked with include PHOX, Hot Flash Heat Wave, Kid Trails, Courtney Barnett, and Fowler. Coleman came up listening to everything from At The Drive In to Barbara Streisand, playing cello, guitar, keyboards and percussion.

Originally from Sacramento, CA, Lien grew up on punk, jazz, and ska which pushed her to pursue a B.A. in Music at UCDavis. There she took the classical route in ethnomusicology/percussion performance as well as graphic design. During that time she became deeply ingrained in the college freeform radio station KDVS 90.3fm which exposed her to experimental electronic music, recording and creating music on different DAWs, and film. Back then and since then, she has played in various bands and continues to do so while joining Different Fur Studios in 2015. She started as an intern and now is involved in engineering, designing, and community organizing at the studio. She also works with Matthew Pereira under the name LIEMA for their film audio company.

With more than ten years’ experience in both studio and live settings, Nic Pope specializes in solving problems nobody else can solve. Whether it’s restoring an old tape, rackmounting an obscure piece of gear, or making hip-hop psychobilly crossover, he can do it. As a teen, Raised in the Bay Area, Pope taught himself several instruments, but always found that his forte was in making his bandmates drums or amps sound good. Pope’s first encounter with audio mixing was when he mixed front of house at age 16 — and he’s been hooked ever since. In his time at Different Fur, Pope has mixed STS9’s When The Dust Settles, recorded the famous Morning Benders session for Yours Truly, and helped build Studio B from scratch, among many other achievements. Pope admires and maintains Different Fur’s tradition of being a place where working-class musicians record elbow to elbow with superstars.

Raised in the East Bay, Sean Paulson has spent the bulk of his six-year recording career at Different Fur. Trained at nearby Ex’pression College, Paulson found himself inspired by the tones and textures found on albums like My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless or The Microphones’ The Glow Pt. 2, Paulson became laser-focused on providing musicians with the perfect sounds, so that they could keep their attention on songwriting and performance.
In Different Fur, Paulson says, he has found a team of like-minded, talented, and hardworking collaborators.

A champion of San Francisco Bay Area music for more than fifteen years, Patrick Brown took the reins at Different Fur in 2007. In his decade at Different Fur, Brown has served as intern, house engineer, studio manager, and owner. Raised and educated between Long Island and Sedona, Arizona, Brown was raised surrounded by music. Between his mother’s massive collection of albums, his father’s saxophone, and his uncle’s experience on the road with everyone from Kool & The Gang to The Beach Boys, Brown was destined for a career in the industry. Brown grew up obsessed with hip-hop, rinsing artists like Cappadonna, Big Pun, and the first DJ Honda mixtape while mainstream radio was blasting Third Eye Blind and Chumbawumba. So, when he struck out on his own for advertising school, he went with his gut instinct and, partially inspired by a documentary on the making of Bjork’s Homogenic, bought a Yamaha QY-70 portable sequencer to satisfy his urge to start composing tracks. Brown eventually got his formal production education at Ex’pression College in the East Bay, and began his career in recording in the early 2000’s. A musical polymath and lover of all genres, Brown enjoys the challenge of getting artists from point A to point B, whether the artist is looking to work on songwriting, step up production quality, or simply grab the listener’s attention. Brown has been involved in records for the likes of Toro y Moi, K. Flay, The Morning Benders, and others, as well as presiding over hundreds of sessions and providing a venue for the prolific videographers of Yours Truly. Passed down from engineer to engineer, in a tradition started by Pat Gleeson in the late 1960’s, Brown is proud to run a studio with such a rich, storied legacy, and to celebrate Different Fur as a historical landmark in an ever-changing city.

I am a freelance sound engineer that has been performing music since I was 6 years old. I started playing music when my mom enrolled me in classical piano classes. I continued with classical piano throughout my childhood, winning many performance competitions and even receiving a scholarship for music to Beloit College, a 4 year college in Wisconsin. It was at Beloit College that I discovered the world of audio recording. At Beloit College I took my first classes in audio engineering and recorded my first mixtapes out my dorm room. Knowing that music was my passion, I moved to Oakland shortly after graduating college in 2007.
For the last 2 years I have had the pleasure of doing my freelance audio engineering work out of the legendary Different Fur Recording Studios in San Francisco's Mission District. Over the last 5 years I have had the pleasure of working with talents such as : Rayven Justice, Laroo THH, Stresmatic of the Federation, Lil Blood, Trill Youngins, G Baby, just to name a few. My mantro is to approach every project with a fresh set of eyes, ears, and thoughts. No project should sound the same in my opinion. My expertise is in Hiphop and R&B, but I am in love with all genres of music.

A resident of the San Francisco electronic and experimental music circuit for over a decade, Matia's work has questioned the line between forward-thinking, avant pop and the depths of the underground.
He honed his craft at the now infamous Asphodel Studios/Recombinant Media Labs where, as an in-house producer and sound designer, he collaborated with the likes of M.I.A., Blixa Bargeld (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds), and many others responsible for pushing the boundaries of the pop context. Never one to shy from the dark or the unorthodox, his production style is equally inclusive: hardware-centric and exudes the decadence and lushness of the past while integrating the precision and speed of today's studio process.
This ethos has directly attributed to Matia's recent demand and success both in the avant-garde (Peter Baumann/Tangerine Dream, Dark Entries Records) as well as the corporate (Akai Professional, Restoration Hardware). No stranger to incorporating his vast collection of vintage synthesizers, drum machines, and fx processors in whatever production he's currently obsessed with, Matia creates a studio environment that is hands on and tactile while yielding an end product that bleeds uniqueness.
His experience as a touring musician and a recording artist forms the basis of an empathic relatability with his clients. When coupled with his Balkan temperament, this leads to sessions that never feel like work but always accomplish the task.

Born and raised the in the Bay Area, Derek Ted moved to San Francisco to study audio engineering at SFSU in 2007. Since then he has found himself writing and recording his own records and others at many studios and DIY spaces around the bay area. Focusing on a live emotive soundscape, Derek pulls old school analog recording methods mixed with his own DIY approach. Inspired by artists like Circa Survive, Wye Oak, Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes, and Angel Olsen and many more Derek has many different approaches between full band records and solo singer song writer styles. Songwriting is his number on painting a picture with the artists he works with to bring out their emotional colors of the songs they write.
