MTV Hive / YT “In My Room” with Daughter and Sky Ferreira

MTV Hive and Yours Truly partnered up at this year’s CMJ for the ‘In My Room’ series. Filmed on a boat in Hoboken, New Jersey and engineered by Patrick Brown, the London-based folk trio Daughter performed “Youth” and “Landfill” surrounded by hanging plants and a wash of white sunlight.

Going from a solo act to a trio, frontwoman Elena Tonra says she prefers creating music and performing with others alongside her adds an extra security. In this intimate performance of the song you can find nearly everywhere – in episodes of Skins and even an airline ad campaign, you wouldn’t be able to guess there are any nerves present. Both “Youth” and “Landfill” are a heart wrenchingly beautiful songs that showcase Tonra’s soft but powerful vocals and strong lyricism with a tinge of bitter brokenheartedness.

“Youth” is from The Wild Youth EP, an airy grouping of four equally mesmerizing songs released by Communion last year while “Landfill” is from their self released His Young HeartEP. The band recently signed with the coveted 4AD records, putting out a new single “Smother” in October which is a small taste of the full length album they are currently working on.

Sky Ferreira

Another pairing of videos engineered by Patrick Brown from MTV Hive and Yours Truly, these featuring Sky Ferreira performing two songs from her latest EP, Ghost, live on a boat in Hoboken New Jersey.

Sky Ferreira performs “Ghost” off the EP with the same name, in a quiet setting only accompanied by one guitarist after explaining how she is still in the process of figuring out what she wants in her sound, and with the help of producer Jon Brion felt confident in the material on this EP. Both performances of “Ghost” and “Sad Dream” fully outline Sky Ferreria’s soulful and still slightly pop voice, which can carry out a song on its own.

Ghost is a complete turnaround from the other EP she released this year, As If – “Sad Dream” being the complete opposite of “Sex Rules” from the latter. Sky Ferreira explains that in the past she didn’t have much to write about, but with the emergence of Ghost – everything has become much more of a personal effort.

Sky Ferreira’s long awaited debut full length, I’m Not Alright, is due out next year.
