San Francisco, 1968: Patrick Gleeson was not fitting in well at his new job. He was the fresh-faced English professor at SF State—a Berkeley-educated, long-haired, bearded young whip who spent his spare time writing poetry and creating sculpture art. Gleeson was regarded with disdain by the college’s hard-drinking, conservative old guard—not least of all his new officemate, the school’s soon-to-be president S.I. Hayakawa. When Gleeson was arrested for participating in the famous Third World Liberation Front and Black Panther strikes, it was the final straw. The faculty gave Gleeson an ultimatum, which he declined. He walked out the door mid-semester and never returned...

THE STUDIOS

With two different rooms each built for flexibility and ease of work flow, we're dedicated to providing a space that can adapt to most projects and budgets

Studio A

The sound of our main room can be heard on thousands of records over the last 4 decades. A mid-size live room approximately 35 x 38 feet, made of staggered Oak and fabric with one additional isolation area. This room is very versatile and can be used for everything from a soft string or piano session, to vocals or powerful drums. Featuring the same SSL 4000 E/G that was installed in 1986 and which has since become the standard in popular music and a favorite for mixers.

Studio B

Designed for simplicity and efficiency, we built our second room with todays modern producer in mind. Tuned as a mixing room and loaded with over 4 full racks of outboard gear in addition to ProTools, and Ableton Live, this redwood trimmed production suite also features a 4 x 5 vocal booth / isolation room equipped with multiple inputs and a speaker tie line. This is the perfect space for mixing, songwriting and overdubs when you don’t need the large space or cost of a traditional studio.

RATES

The mission is simple: provide a professional, affordable space that musicians and producers can work comfortably in.

Over the years studio rates in San Francisco have fluctuated pretty significantly but we tend to cater to a broad range of projects so we like to keep things as straightforward and affordable as we can for everyone. When booking, first decide which room works best for your project and then which engineer you’d like to work with. Rates for engineers vary, and if for some reason you decide that you’d prefer to hire from outside of our house list you’re welcome to. Just keep in mind that we may require an assistant to help while your engineer gets acquainted with our room. If you have any questions, we’re happy to help figure things out.
